Much of the artistic and architectural heritage of Milan is located in the old town, which owes its present appearance to many changes made between the planning unit and the first post-war Italy.

The symbol of the city is the cathedral of Santa Maria Nascente, better known as the Duomo of Milan, in the square, the center of economic and cultural town. A short distance away is the eighteenth-century Teatro alla Scala, one of the world's most famous opera houses.
